Presidential Aspirants for the 2013 Elections
Introduction
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC is the body mandated to vet and gazette those who qualify to run for the office of the President of the Republic of Kenya in the March 4, 2013 General Elections. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 requires that such a candidate nominate a running mate. Chapter 9 - The Executive, Part 2 - The President and Deputy President:
148. (1) Each candidate in a presidential election shall nominate a person who is qualified for nomination for election as President, as a candidate for Deputy President.
Presidential Candidates
Months before the elections, a total of 15 candidates had expressed their intention to run for office. The 15 were namely, Raphael Tuju, Eugene Wamalwa, Uhuru Kenyatta, Raila Odinga, Moses Wetangula, Martha Karua, Mutava Musyimi, Wakoli Bifwoli, Kalonzo Musyoka, Peter Kenneth, James Ole Kiyiapi, Musalia Mudavadi, William Ruto, Paul Muite and Mohamed Dida. However, as the day of gazetting of candidates drew closer, some of them withdrew their candidacy pledged to support that of others, while some entered into pre-election coalitions as running-mates of others. Those that withdrew their candidacy were Mutava Musyimi, Wakoli Bifwoli, Eugene Wamalwa, and Raphael Tuju. The final list of eight candidates and the coalitions in which they ran for the March 2013 elections is given in the following tables. The lists are in no particular order of preference or popularity.
